Why Plastic Surgery is so Acceptable Today

Plastic surgery is becoming more common today than the current memory can recall. Many people are voluntarily going under the knife to ""fix problems"" with their appearance. What used to be a procedure mainly reserved for accident victims or birth defects, has become as common as getting a haircut, for some. One theory for this ""revolution"" may be that as technology advances, we are given more control over our environment, i.e. cell phones, e-mail, internet, even microwaves. All of these inventions have put more control in our hands. That entitlement seems to have leaked over into fields that some feel should not be manipulated, and it is a very fine line for others. If statistics were taken, a pretty close bet would be that at least one person for every two city blocks has had voluntary plastic surgery. If we don't like something, we should have the power to change it. This attitude lends itself to thousands of dollars worth of debt for a change of appearance. A very popular trend currently being advertised involves a mom-makeover; after a woman has had her last child, come on in for plastic surgery to get your body back! This can be very appealing to a woman who now sees her once beautiful body, now stretched and sagging from pregnancy and breast feeding. Some may argue that it is a small price to pay for the miracle that you hold in your arms now. Either way, the average household debt is rising and your neighbor looks thinner and a little more ""blessed"" than you remember, but you haven't really seen them for six weeks or so......

Cosmetic surgery of the breasts is broken down into four categories. These categories refer to the type of surgery that is being performed. In some situations a person may need or want two different types of cosmetic surgery to achieve the desired look. Usually the reasons behind cosmetic surgery of the breasts is just for one's own comfort in the way that they look. In other instances though a person may obtain cosmetic surgery due to a recent trauma to the breasts. This is usually because of cancer or another medical issue that had caused the natural breasts to need to be removed. So cosmetic surgery is used to give the person back the appearance of breasts again.

Augmentation is the cosmetic surgery of the breasts that increases the size, look and contour of the breasts. Implants are used for breast augmentation and are filled with either saline solution or silicone gel. For more modern procedures the implants are filled with saline solution as it is safer if the implant should happen to leak or bust. Silicone gel is no longer used except during clinical trials. The

implants are placed within the breast areas either over or under a patients chest muscles. The incision that the surgeon will make can either be done in the armpit, the areola or in the lower fold of the breast.

Breast reduction is a cosmetic surgery that reduces the size of a woman's breasts. This procedure is done for because of discomfort due to the largeness of the breasts or for appearance sake for a woman that desires the look of smaller breasts. The procedure is done by removing the excess skin on the breast as well as removing fat and breast tissue from inside the breast itself.

The third category of breast cosmetic surgery is breast reconstruction. Breast reconstruction is done to recreate a breast giving the patient the desired look, contour and size that the patient is seeking. This procedure will either use implants or the patients own tissue. When a person's own tissue is used the tissue is usually obtained from the abdominal area or the buttocks. This procedure is a from of cosmetic surgery that is mostly done due to a mastectomy because of cancer or because of damage to the natural breasts. In a situation where only one breast is removed or damaged the cosmetic surgeon will reconstruct the removed or damaged breast to match up with the remaining natural breast in size, contour and appearance.

The fourth category of breast cosmetic surgery is a breast lift also known as mastopexy. This procedure is done to lift sagging breasts back up to their natural height. Breasts begin to sag for a number of reasons such as age, pregnancy. The reason for the sagging is because there is more skin on the breasts than there is breast tissue. During a breast lift the cosmetic surgeon will remove the excess skin from the breasts thus eliminating the sagging of the breasts.

Cosmetic surgery of the breasts is rarely covered by health insurance companies. Federal law does however require that health insurance companies cover reconstruction of the breasts due to a mastectomy. The down side to this though is that federal law does not stop the health insurance companies from raising or dropping your coverage after the procedure is performed.
