It is a scenario commonly joked about on sitcoms. A man or woman gets a tattoo of their lover on their arm, but ends up breaking up with the person. Consequently, they are stuck with a tattoo that doesn't accurately match how they presently feel. It could even cause problems with their current boyfriend or girlfriend. In real life such a scenario could be solved not with laughter but through cosmetic surgery. The forms of cosmetic surgery used for tattoo removal include: excision, dermabrasion/salabrasion and laser.
The excision method of cosmetic surgery can be used on both large and small tattoos. Through this form of cosmetic surgery, the skin containing the tattoo is removed. If the tattooed area is small, it can be stitched together. If the tattoo area is large, the surgeon has to use a skin graft. This is a process in which a large portion of skin from another area of the body is used to close the wound that results from the cosmetic surgery procedure.
The risk associated with this type of cosmetic surgery is infection and/or scarring.
Next, there is the dermabrasion and salabrasion methods of cosmetic surgery. With these forms of cosmetic surgery, the skin is removed layer by layer until the tattoo disappears. With the dermabrasion method of cosmetic surgery, an abrasive tool is used to get rid of the skin, while the salabrasion method of cosmetic surgery uses a sanding device. The only real difference between these forms of cosmetic surgery is that salabrasion involves the surgeon washing the skin with a special salt-water solution before they start abrading. Other than that both of these forms of cosmetic surgery are painful and may result in scarring.
Lastly, there is the laser form of cosmetic surgery. This is the most popular option when it comes to using cosmetic surgery to remove tattoos. The way it works is that a laser sends light to break up the ink that is found underneath the skin. When the ink is broken up it gets 'eaten' by white blood cells sent through your immune system as a response to the whole process. The downside to the laser form of cosmetic surgery is that some colors might be more difficult to remove than others. Even if the laser can remove the initial tattoo, some of the colors might still remain. This form of cosmetic surgery may also cause blisters and scabs once the procedure is finished.
In conclusion, the main types of cosmetic surgery you may have to choose from include: excision, dermabrasion/salabrasion and laser. Of these options for cosmetic surgery, more than likely you'll be using laser, though you won't know for sure until you get evaluated by a plastic surgeon. If you decide that you do not want to go through either of these procedures, you could keep your tattoo as it is or try to cover it up with another tattoo. The risk of a cover-up is much less than using cosmetic surgery, as it is really no different than getting an initial tattoo.
