To Do, or Not to Do: Cosmetic Surgery

Although cosmetic surgery is nothing to rush into, if you want the best results you can't let the decision drag on for years, either. Generally, you'll get better results if you are younger, because you'll heal faster with less scarring, and your body is overall more resilient. So, at some point, you just have to draw the line: Am I going to do this or not? Of course, before you draw that line, you need to do your research. By the time you get to the decision point, you should have had several conference with plastic surgeons and have a very good idea of what you will have done and what the final results will look and feel like. Computer programs can put new features on your own body, and before-and-after photographs can also help you get a sense of what changes will occur. In addition, you should fully understand the recovery process; find a forum devoted to the discussion of plastic surgery. Read the stories of other people and ask lots of questions. Recovery can take months and not all surgeries are simple or completely successful the first time, not to mention those rare case of serious side effects or devastating outcomes. Understand the risk and the rewards. Finally, be honest with yourself about why you want surgery. If you want to much from the procedure-your whole life to change-or if you have a passing ""need"" for it-there's a cute person at work who would notice me-then you're almost certain to be disappointed. If you are looking for something deeper and more subtle, and have scrutinized your own motives, you are much more likely to have a happy result.

Sometimes we may wonder how much and what type of cosmetic surgery is being done throughout the world. We think of the United States, and we imagine that most cosmetic surgery that happens must happen right here. That isn't necessarily the case. Many other countries around the world are quickly becoming meccas for cosmetic surgery.

Almost every country around the world has had an increase in the number of cosmetic surgeries performed. Almost every country in Europe has had more money spent on more cosmetic surgeries than ever before. Admittedly, the country of Spain is by far the leader. Last year, the citizens of Spain spent more than $800 million on cosmetic surgery. Over 400,000 operations were performed last year alone. The most popular cosmetic surgeries in Spain last year were breast enhancements. Over 30,000 breast enhancement surgeries were performed on Spaniard women last year alone. And it isn't only the women who are electing for cosmetic surgery in Spain. 20% of the cosmetic surgeries performed last year were also on the men who predominantly elect for liposuction, eye and facelifts.

In Great Britain last year, cosmetic surgeries were up 35%. Much of the increase can be attributed to marketing
that advertises so called "lunch hour" procedures. This newest marketing strategy with the cosmetic industry is to advertise and promote how quickly a procedure can be done. Therefore, surgeries such as facial peels, Botox injections, and simple eyelifts can be done in less than an hour. This is very attractive to working women (and men), who like the convenience of a quick visit to the doctor's office.

In South America, specifically in the country of Brazil, cosmetic surgery has been, and continues to be, an enormous industry. The cosmetic surgeons in this country are always working on developing new techniques and new parts of the body to improve. Many of the advancements that make it into other countries originated in Brazil. Because of the abundance of cosmetic surgeons in Brazil and because the cost of living in Brazil is so low, many people, from all around the world travel to South America to have their cosmetic surgeries performed. It isn't uncommon to see more than half of the tourists walking around with bandages and facial bruising.

Asian countries are also seeing a marked increase in the number of cosmetic surgeries performed. In Beijing, one hospital alone performs over a thousand major cosmetic surgeries every year. More and more of the surgeries are on college students. And most of the surgeries are on the eye, nose, and major facial reconstruction. The increase of advertising from other countries around the world has convinced many of the Asian youth to want to look more "Western" before they enter into the business world. Many companies in China are taking advantage of this obsession and of the government's lax regulations to sell products such as skin whitening bleach kits in every corner store. Some of these products have caused irreversible damage.

Eyelid surgery is the most prevalent cosmetic surgery done in Asian countries, it is also the most popular surgery to be performed in countries such as Russia and Romania. In countries like India, Norway and Sweden, the most popular cosmetic surgery is breast augmentation. While countries such as Mexico and Canada, Switzerland, South Africa, and Greece choose Botox injections as their number one cosmetic procedure. Australia is a country all unto itself. Its number one cosmetic procedure is upper arm reduction and reshaping.

What we can surmise is that cosmetic surgeries around the world are increasing. It is an industry that knows no limits, as there will always be people who feel the need to attain perfection. 22m2f Transformation22 Gallery
