How plastic surgery changed my life.

Most people think that plastic surgery is cosmetic, that you only get plastic surgery when you don't like the way you look. In addition to the fact that many plastic surgeons perform reconstructive surgeries for burn victims and others, relieving pain and restoring lost function, there are some more ""mundane"" reasons for plastic surgery that can also have a direct effect on your health. I had breast reduction surgery two years ago. I had been suffering severe back pain, shoulder pain and gastric reflux for years before the surgery. Within just a few months, all of these had completely resolved. No more popping pepcid and ibuprofen. Sure, the fact that I can now buy clothes in a ""regular"" store is great, but I would give that up in an instant as long as I could keep the health benefits. If you are thinking about having plastic surgery that would improve you health, talk to your doctor and insurance company about the coverage that is available. My surgery was 100% covered because the insurance company knew that paying 10,000 now was a lot better than the thousands in endoscopy, physical therapy, and shoulder surgeries that was the alternative. It took a brief letter from my surgeon and a couple of days, and I was approved.

For decades, the only option for gaining any relief from painful varicose veins was a procedure known as vein stripping, in which the ends of the veins are tied off and pulled out through an incision in the groin. This is a surgical procedure and the patient needs to be under general anesthesia, and spend time recovering in the hospital, even if it is just over night. For some severe cases, this is still the best option possible for removing the damaged veins. Certain veins that have grown too large will not respond to the benefits of laser therapy and the standard procedure via the operating room is required.

For smaller varicose veins and even spider veins, there is a relatively new approach that more people are opting for and that is the use of lasers. The procedure may be done under a local anesthetic and often right in the physician's office. It entails making a small incision behind the knee and inserting a catheter into the greater saphenous

vein, which runs all along the inner part of the leg and, as it turns out, is usually the source of varicosities. With the guidance of ultrasound, the practiced surgeon is able to insert an electrode that will emit radiofrequency energy inside the vein which causes it to heat, then collapse and finally, seal shut.

Along with the recovery time practically eliminated, the pain from the incision healing and the black and blue discoloration is also not as prominent. Although with all healing, an incision has a tendency to look a little worse before it gets better, but with this laser option, even at its worse, the healing process looks better than the standard procedure of vein stripping.

Spider veins, which are not as debilitating as varicose veins can also be relieved by means of lasers with positive results. Varicose veins occur when the valves that only open one way and keep the blood flowing in the proper direction fail and blood pools in the veins which causes them to enlarge. Enlarged veins are not only an unattractive issue but often can be quite painful.

Another option for cosmetic surgery for spider veins and very small varicose veins, is sclerotherapy, which is a procedure that can be done in the doctor's office without the need for IV or general anesthesia that involves injecting an irritating chemical into the vessel which causes it to close up. This option for the removal of spider veins is effective and the reoccurrence of the problem is rare, provided precautions are followed. Precautions are effective in the causes of spider veins that are not hereditary like, if the patient has a job where they spend a lot of time in a sitting position, it is best to not cross the legs and it is a big help if the patient can get up and walk around every hour or so. It's the blood getting caught in the defective valve and back flowing to a pool that can be prevented with more movement.
