Teens and Plastic Surgery

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) there are many different reasons why teenagers opt for plastic surgery. For most teenagers it is a way to fit in and be more acceptable to their friends and peers and a way to boost their self confidence. In the year 2005 alone more than 300,000 people under 18 years of age opted to undergo plastic surgery.

For some of this teens, the procedure could be as simple as dermabrasion ( a simple procedure to help smoothen or lessen the appearance of acne scars) or it could be as major as nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty) and breast augmentation.

One of the things that a teenager should consider before going for surgery is the cost and real benefit they will get from this cosmetic procedures. It is important for them to understand that undergoing plastic surgery is not the only solutions to their problems and should not be the only option they should consider. They should have realistic expectations of whatever benefits they would gain from it. It is important for parents and doctors alike to determine whether the teenager who wants plastic surgery is mature enough to understand the accompanying temporary disfigurement and discomfort they will have to endure while they are recovering from surgery.

Cosmetic surgery is a procedure that is performed for many birth defects. Sometimes things can go wrong in our mothers womb and anything can happen such as birthmarks, and facial birth defects among other things that can happen. These things can be mild to severe. Here are some common problems with birth defects. Most of these problems can be treated but other may require surgeries. People that get these birth defects can face psychological challenges and may require counseling for them. One of the most common birth defects are birthmarks. Birthmarks can come in many types ranging from small birthmarks to growths that can cause disfigurement. Cosmetic surgery is a way to fix these problems that mother nature can cause.

Another problem that cosmetic surgery can help is a birth defect called cleft lip and palate. This can be a common facial birth defect. Children are sometimes born with either a cleft lip or cleft palate. In some cases they can have both. Surgery to fix the problem often depends on the severity of the birth

defect. For a cleft lip this defect can range from minor to complete splitting of the lip up to the nostril. A cleft palate this separation can be minor or occur from the front to the back of the palate. Sometimes several different surgeries are needed to correct the birth defects. Cosmetic surgery can be performed and can change the lives of the people that are effected by these birth defects.

Sometimes a person is born with craniofacial birth defects. Cosmetic surgery can be performed to help people who are born with this type of birth defect. This is a type of abnormality in the development of the face and skull. Most craniofacial defects are to the face and head, some cases can effect other parts of the body causing things like webbed fingers and toes. Cosmetic surgery can often help these people have a more normal appearance and improve their life caused by the birth defect.

Ear defects are abnormalities of the ears that often occur by birth defects in which cosmetic surgery is needed. The hearing is almost often affected by this. Some examples are the absence of either ear. Which can be treated using grafts or flaps to create a normal shaped ear. Another defect of the ear is where a lump of flesh exists where the ear normally would appear. Cosmetic surgery is often performed to help people with these deformities regain their appearance. Abnormal sized fingers and toes is also a birth defect that can be helped through cosmetic surgery. This condition is usually present at birth or can develop on a child in early years. Cosmetic surgery can be used to correct this defect but depends on the overall health and the severity of their condition.

A drooping eyelid is also a birth defect that can be corrected with cosmetic surgery. This condition can be caused by abnormal muscle development and can effect both eyes or just one at a time. Depending on the severity of the condition this can be treated surgically. Children usually have vision problems or lazy eye with this condition. Male And Female Characteristics
