What?! You're getting a Cosmetic Surgery?!

While many find telling their family about impending surgery difficult, they find telling their friends nearly impossible. Many feel that there is a social stigma against cosmetic surgery. Much of this is in your imagination. Cosmetic procedures are becoming more popular. Nearly everyone knows someone who has taken steps to look the best that they possibly can. However, telling friends can still be nerve racking. There are several ways to deal with this. First, you can just not tell anyone. Go away, have the procedure done, and come back looking better than ever. Most friends might suspect, but they won’t bring it up. Second, you can tell people it’s for medical reasons. In some cases, this is true and no one will question it too closely. However, some procedures are purely for your mental peace of mind and not for a physical reason. Third, you can calmly explain to friends that you have researched the procedure and put a lot of though into it. Most friends are just concerned that you are getting something done for the wrong reasons. Once you explain that it’s something you really want, you will probably find that your friends will be happy for you. In the end, don’t let others perceptions about your choices ruin something that will make you feel better about yourself.

Cosmetic surgery for burn victims has been a necessary medical treatment for many years. Thousands of people are hospitalized in our country every year with burn injuries. Tragically, the most common patients are toddlers and adolescents and half of these are injured in the head and neck regions. Thankfully, there have been many specialized burn centers opened in recent years and deaths from severe burns have dropped significantly.

Life and the resumption of the functions of living are the most important priorities for the initial medical treatment in situations like this. Burn injuries can cause impairments that range from drooling to nasal airway blockage. But the first question asked once a patient is stabilized is invariably "Will I ever look normal again?" It is a tough subject for a doctor to cover with a young person, but one in which can be answered partly by the prospect of cosmetic surgery.

Reconstruction of burned areas has long been done with the use of skin grafts. This is the replacement of scarred and

burned tissue with skin from inconspicuous areas on the patient's body such as the back, the forearm, the scalp, or the posterior. This makes burned areas cosmetically improved and even helps the function of the skin in that it usually moves better with the undamaged skin than the scarred area did.

However, there are some limitations to this long practiced procedure. The skin graft usually looks patchy and without expression and the skin texture can look thicker and less animated. Improvements to skin grafting have continued to be made, however, and have refined this cosmetic surgery procedure as well as making patients happier with the results.

As with everything else in our world today, computers have dramatically changed the way this cosmetic surgery is done. Using computer imaging to map a damaged area helps to create a blueprint for the reconstruction of features. The thick scars of the area are removed and replaced with tissue from the aforementioned donor areas to fill in the defect. Tendon, like tissue taken from the thigh, is used in areas like the lips, cheeks, and nose to support the facial balance. Skin, fat, and blood vessels are pieced together and sculpted to look, feel, and behave like normal skin. The results of these new techniques can be enhanced with makeup to conceal incision areas and sometimes tattooing can be utilized to mimic certain facial features such as eyebrows or beards.

Recovery and rehabilitation time for this cosmetic surgery take about two to four weeks to get back to normal activity. Swelling gradually goes down in the affected areas and the look of the skin begins to normalize. Concealer that matches your skin tone can be used to camouflage any irregularity that still exists.

Even with the miraculous results of this type of cosmetic surgery, severe burn disfigurements cannot be totally erased. Still, people's lives are dramatically enhanced with the successful outcomes of these surgeries and give them a semblance of normalcy. That is a worthy accomplishment if I ever heard one.
