Plastic Surgery for Men

In today’s world both women and men want to appear youthful and so it is not unusual to find men of all ages getting plastic surgery done for purely cosmetic reasons. Like women, men request surgery to change how their noses look, make their faces look younger or even receive liposuction. There a many things that differ with regards to plastic surgery for men. These include the thickness of their skin and the way their facial hair grows. If a man chooses to get a face lift then his surgeon will determine if he has a receding hairline and will consider the fullness of his sideburns. He will also look for facial scars, sun damage and saggy skin on the neck. The skin on a man’s face receives a greater blood supply than a woman’s skin does which means that a man’s face will bleed more during surgery. This also means that men face a higher risk of having a hematoma, or pool of blood form underneath the skin following their procedure. Another factor to consider is that since men don’t normally wear makeup, they will find it difficult to hide any scarring that may occur as a result of their surgery.

Other procedures that men can opt for are calf implants, pectoral implants, and having a form of liposuction done on their abdomens that creates a rippled look. These are all fairly new procedures so if a man is thinking about having any of these procedures done he needs to make sure he speaks with a board-certified plastic surgeon that is skilled in these techniques.

Facial Cosmetic Surgery

It wasn't long ago when, if you said you were going to have cosmetic surgery, it was simply assumed that you would be going into an operating room and having general anesthesia. These procedures have their own dangers and anytime the process involves general anesthesia there is always the risk of death. As we become more and more advanced medically there are always changes and efforts in improving any side effects or dangers.

One of the first concerns someone who is inquiring about facial cosmetic surgery is scarring. After all, the surgery is being done TO the face, what are the chances of ending up with scars? Of course, with this kind of surgery all efforts are made to hide the tiny lines where the incision was made. The second biggest concern is about nerve damage. With facial cosmetic surgery especially, there is always a risk of cutting the nerves in the face and it could leave a patient with permanent or partial paralysis. As with other surgeries there is the heightened risk of excessive bleeding, infections that can occur after the surgery and blood clots. It is imperative that the patient be in good health before any procedure is discussed and after the surgery, the patient's temperature should be closely monitored, in case there is a sign of an infection, it can be addressed immediately.

One of the reasons facial cosmetic surgery has always been viewed as a benefit for the rich and famous is because of the cost. Most insurance companies will not pay for any kind of elective cosmetic surgery and it is also difficult to get them to pay when there is a physical reason for the surgery, like a cleft palate or a harelip. The increases in numbers of people who have sought out the gifts of a plastic surgeon are influenced by the drop in pricing for the procedures. Due to the medical advances made in the field of cosmetic surgery, and the less likely a patient is needed to have a full operating room, general anesthesia experience, the more affordable the procedures have become.

In the past few years with the increase in popularity in procedures such as Botox or collagen injections, where there is only the requirement of a series of needles and solutions that are injected into the face, the demand has become almost the norm.

One final concern that should be addressed before someone investigates the options of cosmetic surgery is the psychological issues and effects the experience can stir up. Unfortunately, it is not a rare occurrence for someone to become addicted to the effects of plastic surgery and there have been numerous cases where once on surgeon has refused to do any more surgical work on a patient, they have found another surgeon who will do it.
There is an addictive component that should not be ignored and should be explored before, during and after any plastic surgery.

The surgery may only take a few minutes but the results last a lifetime and it is irresponsible, in my opinion, for surgeons to not follow up with patients.
