Why Plastic Surgery is so Acceptable Today

Plastic surgery is becoming more common today than the current memory can recall. Many people are voluntarily going under the knife to ""fix problems"" with their appearance. What used to be a procedure mainly reserved for accident victims or birth defects, has become as common as getting a haircut, for some. One theory for this ""revolution"" may be that as technology advances, we are given more control over our environment, i.e. cell phones, e-mail, internet, even microwaves. All of these inventions have put more control in our hands. That entitlement seems to have leaked over into fields that some feel should not be manipulated, and it is a very fine line for others. If statistics were taken, a pretty close bet would be that at least one person for every two city blocks has had voluntary plastic surgery. If we don't like something, we should have the power to change it. This attitude lends itself to thousands of dollars worth of debt for a change of appearance. A very popular trend currently being advertised involves a mom-makeover; after a woman has had her last child, come on in for plastic surgery to get your body back! This can be very appealing to a woman who now sees her once beautiful body, now stretched and sagging from pregnancy and breast feeding. Some may argue that it is a small price to pay for the miracle that you hold in your arms now. Either way, the average household debt is rising and your neighbor looks thinner and a little more ""blessed"" than you remember, but you haven't really seen them for six weeks or so......

Risks Associated With Cosmetic Surgery For Breast Augmentation

All types of surgery carries risks with it. For medical reasons most surgeries need to be performed despite the risks. With cosmetic surgery the risks to some seem unnecessary. Therefore it is up to the individual as to whether or not the risk is worth taking when having any type of cosmetic surgery procedure performed. With breast augmentation there are several risks that come with the procedure. Some risks are minimal and do not carry any actual complications with it. While other risks are more serious and need to be addressed immediately. Before undergoing cosmetic surgery for breast augmentation you should evaluate the risks factors then decide if the risks are worth taking in your unique individual situation.

Breast augmentation carries the risk of what is known as capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is where your body will surround the implant with what is known as a capsule. For the most part capsular contracture does not pose any problems to the patient. But in some instances a capsular contracture will begin to tighten around the implant and this tightening will cause the breast to feel hard as well as causing pain in the breast. In the event that the capsular contracture causes hardening and pain, cosmetic surgeons can address this removing the capsular contracture and in some cases by replacing the implant.

Excessive bleeding is another risk associated with breast augmentation. While some level of bleeding is expected, excessive amounts of blood lose can cause serious health risks. When excessive bleeding happens additional surgery is required to stop the bleeding and remove any accumulations of blood. Your cosmetic surgeon will do a medical work up on you to see if you have any health issues that may make you a candidate for excessive bleeding. While your medical history may show that you are not a candidate anything is possible on the operating table.

Infections happen in a small number of breast augmentation patients. The infection usually begins around the implant. For a mild infection usually antibiotics are prescribed and the infection clears up without any further complications. In the event that you acquire a severe infection then the cosmetic surgeon may suggest temporarily removing your implant.

The loss of sensation around the nipples or the location of the incision is another risk that a person runs when having cosmetic surgery for breast augmentation. In most cases though a patient will regain some of the normal sensation in these areas back given time.

While this is not a serious health risk it is still a risk that one must consider before having surgery.

Implant rupture is the reason that saline solution filled implants are now used versus the silicone gel filled implants. Silicone gel is now only available for women taking part in clinical trials. With the rupture or leaking of saline solution the body will just absorb the saline solution with no health risk posed to the patient. The risks of a rupture are run with any type of trauma to the breast. Normal everyday activities can also cause the implant to rupture or tear.

Connective-tissue disorders were a risk in the past with implants that used silicone gel. Women would develop symptoms of an immune system disorder when they had implants that were filled with silicone gel. It is for this reason also that silicone gel is no longer allowed to be used except in clinical trials.
