Risks Associated With Cosmetic Surgery For Breast Reductions
Surgery carries with it all sorts of risk factors. When undergoing surgery for a health problem the risks usually are not as important as the results of becoming healthier are. With cosmetic surgery though the risks need not be taken for any health problems. One should weigh all risks before undergoing any cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery for breast reduction can give a person more comfort due to the fact that it reduces the strain on the body from large breasts. Large breasts can cause back pain, soreness and even difficulty when purchasing clothing. While the difficulty with purchasing clothing may seem minor to some people, it can seem overwhelming to a person with large breasts who wishes to dress like other people. At the same time you must decide if what you will gain from the breast reduction is worth the risks that you are putting yourself at.
When it comes to scarring this is not considered a risk associated with the surgery. Scarring will happen no matter what during the procedure. There are things that can be done to minimize the appearances of scars and your cosmetic surgeon will discuss those prior to surgery as well as after surgery.
Embolisms are a risk that are associated with any surgery. An embolism is a blockage that is caused by small clots that break away and move into the blood stream. A pulmonary thromboembolus is a clot that has lodged in the lungs. This can cause breathing problems, cardiac arrest and even a coma. In extreme situation it can lead to death.
All surgeries run the risk of infection. Usually the infection can be cleared up with antibiotics and cause no further complications. The patient will usually receive something to reduce the fever that accompanies infections.
Fat and Tissue Necrosis is a risk associated with breast reductions. This happens when the tissue that has been moved around during surgery dies. This condition is extremely rare but is still a possibility when one undergoes cosmetic surgery for a breast reduction.
The loss of sensation and/or numbness is also a risk when one undergoes cosmetic surgery for a breast reduction. During a breast reduction incisions are made and it is in those areas that the loss of sensation and/or numbness may occur. Also during the procedure the nipples may be detached and reattached later. There is usually permanent loss of sensation in the nipples if they had been detached during the procedure. All other loss of sensation and numbness will usually go away with time.
Hyperpigmentations can occur with cosmetic surgery. Hyperpigmentations are permanent bruising that occurs around the area of the surgery or any area that was manipulated during the surgery. While these permanent bruises do not pose any health risks they can be unsightly thus making the patient self conscious about their new breasts.
There is a possibility of asymmetry after a breast reduction. While your cosmetic surgeon will do everything possible to make the both breasts as even as can be, there is no guarantee that the breasts will be even. A slight asymmetry occurs with natural breasts therefore a slight bit of asymmetry should not be a problem. Temporary asymmetry can occur as well to the point where it is really noticeable due to the fact that each breast will heal differently. This is not a big concern due to the fact that after all healing is done the noticeable asymmetry will be gone. In the event of a pronounced asymmetry problem after all healing is done, then additional cosmetic surgery will be needed to correct the problem.
