Shopping for a Reputable Cosmetic Surgeon
Cosmetic surgery is elective surgery, which means that it isn't covered by your personal health insurance. This doesn't mean that you should feel that the only resource you have to pick a cosmetic surgeon is the Yellow Pages. Even though your health insurance does not cover elective cosmetic surgery, your personal doctor or your health insurance provider may have recommendations for reputable cosmetic surgeons in your area.
Before you see any doctor, you should be fairly knowledgeable about the procedure or procedures that you are interested in. Try to understand what is involved in that procedure, what type of anesthetic is usually used, and how long the procedure and the healing afterwards should take.
Normally, a reputable cosmetic surgeon will meet with a potential patient two to three times before the actual procedure takes place. Beware of doctors and offices that offer free consultations. Be wary of doctors who only meet with you once, have very little to say and then immediately schedule your surgery for the next appointment. A reputable cosmetic surgeon will ask a lot of questions, give lots of advice and warnings, and suggest the best cosmetic surgery for you. Most of all, they will listen to you and take the time to answer all of your questions.
If you are not a good candidate for surgery, a reputable cosmetic surgeon will let you know all of the risks and may even refuse to do the procedure. People who have heart problems, high or low blood pressure, or are heavy smokers would not be good candidates for surgery. A disreputable cosmetic surgeon will operate on almost anybody.
Although a new patient will be very anxious to have the procedure done as quickly as possible, it is imperative that you take your time. Each consultation that you have with your perspective surgeon may have a fee, but it is better to pay a little extra and meet with your doctor as many times as needed. By the time the day arrives for you to have your cosmetic surgery, you should feel as prepared as possible. You should know what is going to happen, what the risks are, and what to expect during recovery.
If, after meeting with the perspective doctor, you feel uncomfortable in any way or if you feel that your questions were not be answered then you should try another doctor. Losing the money you paid for the consultation fee with a doctor that isn't right for you, is a small price to pay for your overall health and well being.
It is always good when meeting a cosmetic surgeon for the first consultation, to be prepared with a list of questions. Of course, you will want to know that this physician is board-certified in plastic surgery. Next, it is important to know that he is specially trained in the cosmetic surgery procedure you are interested in. Ask him or her how many of these types of procedures they perform in a year. Some cosmetic surgeons even have a list of former patients that you can call and get their opinions on a doctor and the office. Another important aspect to inquire about is which hospital the physician is affiliated with. Even though the procedure that you will be having may be one that the doctor will be performing in his or her office, it is important and comforting to know that they could take you to a reputable hospital if the worst-case scenario should happen.
Once the doctors credentials check out, it is more of a personal preference and if the doctor's personality is one that you feel comfortable with. Having a doctor who walks into the room, recites his speech and doesn't seem to take the time to listen to you or answer your questions may not be the right doctor for you.
Once you have found a reputable cosmetic surgeon who you are completely happy with, make sure that you sing his or her praises to all of your friends, family, and coworkers who may be thinking about cosmetic surgery and will be looking for a surgeon of their own.
