What?! You're getting a Cosmetic Surgery?!

There are a variety of reasons that people have a negative view of cosmetic surgery, and they often balk at the news shared by anyone who has undergone such a procedure. Whether their opinions have been skewed by religious perspective, personal experience, or societal stereotypes, these reasons for disapproval can range from the petty to the serious. For example, there are individuals who view the human body as a gift from God, and see any attempt to alter it in an unnatural way as a sin. They will often look to passages in the Bible as support of their arguments against cosmetic surgery of any kind. Additionally, there are other persons who have had cosmetic procedures of their own and may have experienced a result less than the one they had anticipated. Thus, their view of these surgeries, based on the failures of their own, is unfavorable. Finally, some people might believe that cosmetic surgeries are luxuries sought out by only the rich and famous, statements of dissatisfaction with one’s own appearance, or attempts to personify something they are not. In short, they act as if society has taught them that such cosmetic procedures are “not for them.” All in all, such attitudes might be attributed to a lack of proper information or education. But, as long as cosmetic surgeries exist, there will be those opposed to its very nature.

The Popularity of Traveling Abroad for Cosmetic Surgery

Cosmetic surgery has become more than a simple trip to your local plastic surgeon for a quick nip and tuck. In fact, cosmetic surgery has become a major aspect of the tourism industry. There is even a term for it. You can hop down to your local travel agency and inquire about their selections they have available for medical tourism, sometimes called healthcare tourism.

Many people from Europe, the United States, and Australia, who are considering having a cosmetic surgery procedure done, often contemplate traveling to another country to have the surgery. The motivation is usually money. Cosmetic surgery in most of the major countries is quite expensive when compared to other countries in the world. Countries that promote these types of vacations like to focus on the romantic idea of combining a vacation with the desire to improve looks through a surgical procedure.

One of the most popular countries that people travel to for a medical vacation is Brazil. Brazil proudly touts itself as the cosmetic surgery capital of the world. Brazilians are very proud to point out all of the cosmetic surgeries they have had performed. It is very common for Brazilian teenagers to have had their noses reshaped and most Brazilian women have had breast augmentation and/or liposuction.

In their culture, it is very undesirable to be unattractive. They strive to be known as the country with the most beautiful people in the world. The carnivals in Rio de Janeiro are their showcase to the world of just how beautiful they are. This obsession with beauty creates a high demand for cosmetic surgeons and other professionals in the beauty field. Because of the abundance of cosmetic surgeons in Brazil and the less stringent medical regulations, they can offer to do a surgery for a fraction of the cost. This attracts many people from around the world.

For many of the same reasons, this is why other countries such as Italy, Spain and South Africa are popular places for medical tourism. You will find that many Europeans will go to Italy or South Africa while most Americans who wish to travel abroad for cosmetic surgery will go to Brazil. And while it is great to save money, there are some important things that you should consider before taking part in a cosmetic surgery procedure in another country.

For one thing, pre-surgery consultations, this is where you and your doctor discuss the best surgery for you and all of the risks involved do not really happen when you are traveling to another country. Most of the contact you will have with the doctor's office will be online or over the telephone. In many cases, the first time you meet with your physician is the day of your surgery.

Another very serious consideration is the lack of knowledge about your physician. Medical accreditation is different in every country. You must do a little investigating on your own to determine how qualified the doctor is. In the United States, most physicians even physicians who do their procedures in their office, are still affiliated with a local, major hospital. In other countries, you may find that the physician does not have privileges in any hospital and is forced to deal with emergencies as best as he can. There are hundreds of news stories that report on cosmetic surgery tragedies that happened abroad.

It is also a bit of a misrepresentation that this trip will be much of a vacation. Depending on the cosmetic procedure that is being done, recovery can be quite long and painful and the notion of sightseeing and enjoying the nightlife may be quite far-fetched. Some post-surgery instructions require that you stay out of the sun. So, even if you planned on taking it easy by the pool you may find that to be impossible as well.

One other point to consider before traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery is postoperative care. Most times after a procedure your surgeon will want to see you and evaluate how you are progressing. Once you return home from your medical vacation, you may be half a world away from your surgeon. If your scars don't heal or you have any complications, you will need to see a local cosmetic surgeon. Many doctors in this country deal with correcting the mistakes and treating serious infections from procedures done elsewhere.

The news isn't all bad when considering traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery. It can be a wonderful experience. Most of the doctors are skilled, qualified surgeons who have performed thousands of procedures successfully. But, this isn't the type of vacation to be jumped into on a moment's notice. A lot of thought and research should go into planning such a vacation. You will be placing not only your looks, but also your life into another's hands.
