What Are the Most Popular Cosmetic Surgeries Performed
By far, the most popular cosmetic procedures that are performed today in most countries around the world are Botox injections and chemical peels. While the most popular cosmetic surgery around the world is still breast augmentation, this includes breast reduction and breast implants.
In the United States, the most popular cosmetic surgery is liposuction. Liposuction began in Italy in 1974. A gynecologist developed the original procedure and four years later, a French physician further improved the process. Early liposuction surgeries were unattractive and caused a lot of bleeding and bruising. It wasn't until 1985 that a new technique called, the tumescent technique was developed that greatly improved the results and shortened the healing time.
By the 1990s, liposuction surgeries were the most popular cosmetic procedure to be performed in the US and remains so to this day. Many people see liposuction as a solution to weight loss. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Liposuction is only an option when the patient is not overweight, but has an area that is larger and out of proportion with the rest of his or her body.

Cosmetic surgeons who specialize in liposuction are continuing to make new advancements in the field. One of the newest forms of liposuction introduced in the late 1990's is ultrasonic liposuction. This is where the fat cells are targeted and loosened by soundwaves. This form of cosmetic surgery is quite expensive, as it is still in the early stages. But once the procedure has been "perfected", the costs will come down. Initially, it is thought ultrasonic liposuction will be far superior to the liposuction surgeries that are performed today.
The second most popular cosmetic surgery performed in the United States is eyelid surgery. The skin around our eyes is very thin and therefore, wrinkles, sags, and bags much sooner than anywhere else on our face. Cosmetic surgeries for the eyes are being performed at an earlier and earlier age. Patients wish to eliminate crows feet, bags under the eyes, and puffy eyelids. These surgeries are being performed on an increasing number of men. Because our eyes age so prematurely and cause us to look older than we are, eyelid surgeries are now a very common occurrence.

There were so many complications with silicone that it was completely replaced with saline implants. Today, silicone implants are making a resurgence. Improvements have been made to help correct the problem of leaking and of the silicone implants hardening after many years. The FDA is expected to approve the use of silicone implants quite soon.
The large number of breast reduction surgeries also contributes to making breast augmentation the third most popular cosmetic surgery in the US. Both women and men who have too much fat and tissue in this area elect to undergo breast reduction.
And finally, to round out the top five most popular cosmetic surgeries performed in the United States, next you have rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty is where a cosmetic surgeon reshapes the nose. Lastly, the fifth most popular surgery is the facelift.
In a recent poll, 20% of Americans said that they had either had cosmetic surgery performed or planned on having a procedure performed very soon. With the advancements being made in cosmetic surgery and the increase in its general acceptance, that percentage will, undoubtedly, rise.
